Those memberships were originally in associationwith your 'tag' (e.g. "Cooking for Charlie" etc) They were going to follow along the lines of Edward for team Edward and Jacob for team Jacob.

However the forum grew so quickly and is so popular that it was too dificult to try and keep track of everyone so now everyone follows the same steps.

It is my understandings that these steps roughly follow Bella through the books and her interactions with various people/events!
